Wenger quadruple completed, is this the time to ring changes?

April 3, 2011

Despite having foreseen the situation we are currently in, I am struggling for words. It has to be said that I have the utmost admiration for the few top regular Arsenal bloggers, whichever side of the Force they happen to represent,  who are delivering the posts to us Gooners all over the world like clockwork 365 days a year, come rain or shine. Yesterday’s debacle against Blackburn left me absolutely numb and I can’t even muster a proper rant. To be perfectly honest, I just can’t see much of a purpose in doing so, simply because if there is one thing I have learned in life, it is that one should not get annoyed with stuff he or she is not in position to change.

Besides, quite frankly, I don’t think I care as much as I used to – the product of the Our Glorious Leader’s little pet project has once again come down crashing and barring some disaster of Japanese tsunami proportions at the league table leaders’ camp we are now pretty much out of the fourth (and last) competition this season. Seems like we are now in the hunt for the much maligned ‘third place trophy’ – this term is to be used loosely, as we may yet finish second, which without a shadow of doubt will be deemed to be a sign of progress and an excuse for the manager to think that he almost got it right and that the grand prize is just around the twelve month sized corner.

I could go on about the poor matchday management, tactical ineptitude, pathetic substitutions, lack of dedication, aggression and will to win, but you know what? Fuck that, this Gooner has got enough of this nonsense, false dawns, lies, rewarding failure and allowing the rot to spread throughout the team like cancer. Last evening, we did not see a team in the hunt for the title, what we got was a bunch of overpaid, overrated ‘unprofessionals’ who got brainwashed by their Führer into believing that they are in position to command respect reserved for the true greats despite not winning anything, hell, even failing miserably when presented with golden opportunity to break the duck. Like I said on the Le Grove’s thread yesterday, if this team can’t motivate themselves to chase the title and contribute to one of the most despicable shitkicker teams in the whole league getting relegated, then I’m afraid we have a serious problem on our hands.

Seems like the chickens have finally come home to roost, even the most ardent Wengerites are having difficulties with defending the indefensible. There are some that are still trying to peddle the same tired ‘Support your team or fuck off’ nonsense, but the truth is that it can’t be a one-way street, if the team wants us to cheer, we want something to cheer about, no two ways about it. The club is sadly now run just like any other business, the paying fans are being treated like customers and the club seems to be losing its soul to the monetary devil. Following Arsenal costs more than any other club in Europe and the smart arses behind the scenes are trying to sell us the great vision of the future that sadly does not seem like it is ever going to materialise. Surely, they must think that they are very smart, selling the average product at the premium price, but the difficulty with that approach  is that you can’t have it both ways, the fans are not stupid and as Bob Marley sang ‘you can fool some people sometimes, but you can’t fool all the people all the time’, Johnny Rotten summed it up perfectly:

Go Johnny, you legend!

Being the great worshipper of the Murphy’s Law, I have pretty much written off this season, now we have to ask ourselves a question: where do we go from here?

To be honest, I am not the one to advocate sacking the manager outright, but I believe that someone should just read him the riot act, announce with the sufficient degree of authority that such failures will no longer be tolerated and that we need to show everyone and his uncle that we mean business. Whilst is sounds like a pretty good plan if you consider the long term stability and all that, it has a couple of potentially significant flaws: first of all, I just don’t see anyone with enough cojones to stand up to Wenger, who commands absolute totalitarian power at the club. With not a single proper football man on board since Dein was ousted, there just is no one to question him or give him orders, as they are simply too scared to lose the man who is earning them money, besides, sacking him would set us back about £18M, hence there is no real stick to beat him with. Wenger’s pictures are hung all over the place and even the matchday hospitality booking helpline pre-recorded message goes ‘Hi, this is Arsene Wenger’, the man has taken over the club from top to bottom and it will take a brave man to put a stop to it…

It’s 4 AM here and I am struggling to keep my eyes open. Seems like I do care afterall, eh?

  3. A little bit ironic as Lydon is now a millionaire property developer who lives in Malibu. His wife is a publishing heiress.

  5. […] images put up all over the place and the pre-recorded helpline messages, which I mentioned in the Sunday’s post. I mean, which manager does that? Sure, we did put Herbert Chapman’s bust in the Marble […]
